Multiplying Impact

Impact You Can See
Here are just a few of the successes from United Way supported programs last year:

  • Youth Violence Prevention
A safe environment in our schools is critical to the well-being of school children, and critical to their success. United Way’s involvement in the Sussex County Task Force on Street Gangs, coupled with sponsorship of “Taking Flight to Change” and Teen Interpersonal Violence Prevention programs, all contribute to creating a safer environment in which all Sussex County students can achieve their highest level of success.

  • United Way Sneaker Program
United Way learned that there were children attending school in our county without appropriate sneakers.  Partnering with People Help of Sussex County and school nurses, United Way designed a system to provide these children with a new pair of sneakers when their parents are unable to do so.  Last year, this program purchased 121 parks of sneakers here in Sussex County.

  • Caring Connection
There are children in our community who, for their own safety, must be removed from situations of abuse or neglect. When these children are removed, often the only thing available for them to carry their few belongings is a black trash bag. United Way, local Rotary Clubs, Stocker Bus Company, and Soroptomist Club have joined forces to provide brand new duffel bags filled with personal care items, pajamas, socks, and small toys for comfort.

  • Gift of Warmth
During the holiday season, The New Jersey Herald conducts “Gift of Warmth”, collecting more than 430 brand new winter coats for those in need in our community. United Way is the lead organization for the distribution of the “Gift of Warmth” donations.

  • Day of Caring
Day of Caring unites volunteers from throughout the community to offer their time and talents to local non-profit organizations.  Sussex County’s Day of Caring volunteers also perform ‘chore services’ at the homes of our county’s elderly. In 2006 nearly 100 volunteers participated in Day of Caring.

  • Food Pantry Initiative
In today’s economic climate low-income families are seeking assistance from local food pantries to help meet the daily nutritional needs of their families.  With the need for this service increasing, United Way has implemented a cooperative effort among all local food pantries to better meet this growing need.

  • Keep Kids Safe
Children facing abuse and neglect need all of us – as caring adults – to be their voice. United Way and its partners have launched the Keep Kids Safe initiative.  Through training sessions and public awareness efforts, residents are educated and urged to take steps to reduce incidents of child abuse in Sussex County. Prevention of child abuse and neglect is everybody’s business.

Sussex County is a community strong with tradition of caring for people in need. Your support of United Way enhances the quality of life for people in our community every day.
