UNITED WAY & PASS IT ALONG LAUNCH FOOD STOCK

United Way of Sussex County, in partnership with Pass It Along, has launched a community-wide food drive, “Food Stock”. Local food pantries have been reporting that the numbers of families accessing the pantries for food has skyrocketed, while supplies have dwindled.
The summer months of July and August are the most difficult for families trying to make ends meet. During the school year, 1,566 Sussex County schoolchildren received free lunch, and another 901 schoolchildren received a subsidized lunch. During the summer break, these children will have one less nutritious meal every day, and this places an additional strain on their already over-burdened families.

EARNED INCOME TAX CREDIT
You or someone that you know could be missing out on thousands of dollars. Each year, hard-working, tax-paying families in Sussex County miss out on hundreds of thousands of dollars by not claiming the EITC on their federal and New Jersey state tax returns. The EITC is a federal and state tax credit available to many low-to-moderate income working families and individuals. This credit is not based on taxes withheld from a person's paycheck, but instead on how much total income a taxpayer earned over the course of a year. A single parent, with two or more children, could qualify for as much as $4,716 in federal EITC, and may also qualify to claim the state tax credit. These dollars can be turned into savings or invested in the local economy. It can help build the financial assets of a family and move them forward on their path to financial stability.
Even though the EITC has been around for many years, many taxpayers are unaware of the tax credits for which they qualify under federal and state tax codes.
United Way of Sussex County, is partnering with the IRS, and its partners are working to help spread the message about the importance of this tax credit.
